About Crawford Consultancy

Friendly, practical support for small businesses that need a helping hand with HR, payroll, benefits, training and business support.

Built around the realities of small business

I started Crawford Consultancy because I know first-hand how much small business owners have to juggle. Having spent many years working in family businesses and operational roles, I understand the pressure of trying to keep everything moving while wearing lots of different hats.

Over time, my role moved more into HR and payroll, and I could see how often small businesses were left trying to manage important things like contracts, payroll, benefits, training and admin without the right support in place. I also know that for many businesses, employing a full-time HR or payroll manager simply isn’t realistic — and expensive consultancy support can feel just as out of reach.

Crawford Consultancy was created to offer something more practical: friendly, flexible support that helps small businesses stay on top of the people side and admin side of the business, without the overhead of employing in-house.

Approachable, practical and affordable

When I started Crawford Consultancy, I wanted to create a business that felt genuinely helpful to small businesses — not overly corporate, not intimidating, and not priced in a way that made support feel out of reach.

For me, that means offering support that is:

Approachable

Support should feel easy to ask for. Small businesses don’t need to feel like they have to navigate complicated processes or overly formal advice just to get help.

Practical

Advice should be useful, realistic and tailored to the way a small business actually works — not a generic template that looks good on paper but doesn’t fit in practice.

Flexible

Not every business needs the same level of support. Some need help with a one-off project, some need regular monthly support, and some just need someone they can turn to when something crops up.

Affordable

Small businesses often can’t justify the cost of a full-time HR or payroll hire, and many don’t have the budget for expensive consultancy fees. I wanted to offer a level of support that felt manageable, worthwhile and accessible.

Hands-on experience across operations, HR and payroll

My background spans family businesses, operational roles, HR and payroll — which means I understand that these things rarely sit in neat little boxes in a small business.

In smaller businesses especially, the people side of the business, payroll, admin and day-to-day operations often overlap. You might be dealing with a payroll query one minute, a contract issue the next, and then trying to sort onboarding paperwork, training or a process problem on top of everything else.

That broader experience means I don’t just look at one issue in isolation. I understand how the practical side of running a business fits together, and I aim to offer support that works in the real world — not just in theory.

Alongside that hands-on experience, I also bring professional qualifications and practical knowledge in HR and payroll, helping small businesses get the support they need from someone who understands both the people side and the operational side of the business.

Support for small businesses that need an extra pair of hands

I work with small businesses, family-run businesses and growing teams that need reliable support without the cost of employing in-house.

That might mean:

  • a business taking on staff for the first time and needing contracts, onboarding or payroll support
  • a growing team that needs help keeping payroll, benefits and employee admin organised
  • a business owner who wants practical HR support without employing a full-time HR manager
  • a company that needs support with training, admin or day-to-day business processes
  • a small business that simply needs an extra pair of hands to help keep things moving

Whether support is needed for a one-off project or on an ongoing basis, the aim is always the same — to make life a little easier and help businesses feel more organised, supported and in control.

Support shaped around your business

No two businesses are the same, so I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Some clients need support with a specific issue, such as contracts, payroll, onboarding or benefits administration. Others need more regular help each month. Some just want the reassurance of knowing there’s someone they can pick up the phone to when something comes up.

Whatever the situation, my approach is to keep things simple, practical and manageable — offering support that fits around your business, rather than expecting your business to fit around a rigid service package.
